HOUSE 13 How to Beat The Hitcher
Darkness is a timer. Lit rooms are the counter. Do not sprint the black stair for fun.
The Hitcher is HOUSE 13’s darkness threat. The badge text is the whole kit: “It settles on you in the dark. Get back into a lit room before your time in darkness runs out.” You do not stun it with a special item. You leave the unlit volume. This page is how to beat The Hitcher as a routing problem. Pair it with survive the night (lights are step three) and controls so you actually know how to keep a lamp in play.
What The Hitcher looks like
Official shots show a dark body on a stair void and a pale, grinning figure on a dining-room ceiling above candles. Those are travel pictures: the Hitcher uses the spaces you treat as shortcuts. Stairs, unlit halls, rooms where someone blew out candles for mood — that is Hitcher real estate. The entity badge is rare compared with Easy’s free start. People do not respect darkness until Medium’s twelve nights make the timer obvious.
The winning habit
Before you enter a space, ask whether it is lit. If it is not, do not enter unless you can see a lit doorway on the other side and you will not stop. Stopping in the dark is how the timer completes. Searching a dark closet “real quick” is how you stack Hitcher and The Nester. Close closets from the lit side.
Keep lights on. If a teammate turns them off for screenshots, turn them back on. HOUSE 13’s own description asks for max graphics so you can tell black from gray. Headphones help you hear when a room dies. The Hitcher is A-tier on the threat ranking because the timer is short enough to punish curiosity, not because it is an unfair teleport.
Co-op light discipline
In co-op, one player can be the light caller: “stair dark, take the hall.” Do not send four people through a black shortcut to save a Reacher window. Split. One takes the lit path to glass. One holds the door. Thirty-two players is enough to never need a dark sprint.
What not to do
- Do not buy a fullbright script. There is no verified HOUSE 13 paste, and a lighting cheat can hide a timer the server still runs. See script safety.
- Do not camp in a candle room with the door open and the hall black if you still need to sweep. Plan a lit circuit.
- Do not chase a jumpscare into a stairwell. The gallery crawl on the stairs is a warning label.
- Do not stand in the dark to “hear the visitor better.” Identification happens at the plate, in whatever light the porch has. See identify Impostors.
After a Hitcher death
Log it as dark, not as Reacher, even if you were going to a window. Then change the route: extra lamp, different hall, no stair. Easy’s six nights are enough to map which rooms go black. When Survived Easy is boring, Medium will still try the same timer on night eleven. Play night eleven like night one.
Beating The Hitcher is boring on purpose. Lit rooms, short dark crossings, no scenic black. Then you still have to Close Door and shut glass. The Hitcher is only the third step. Skip it and the fourth step never matters. HOUSE 13 is released and online. The timer does not care that you were “almost” at the lamp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common HOUSE 13 questions.
How do you beat The Hitcher?
Leave darkness before the timer ends. Stay in lit rooms. Do not linger on black stairs.
Does The Hitcher spawn in bright rooms?
The badge is darkness. Keep lights on and route through illumination.
Is fullbright a good counter?
No verified script, and the server may still count dark. Prefer real lamps. See scripts.
Should I cross a dark hall to shut a window?
Only if a lit path does not exist. Do not trade Hitcher for Reacher. Use co-op to split jobs.
